Adam graduated from the British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy with a BSc (Hons) in Osteopathic Medicine. His special interests include sports injuries, foot biomechanics and orthotics; pregnant and post-natal women and he has great success treating chronic patients, through use of his 'whole body' approach to treatment.

Always an active person, Adam was a schoolboy county gymnast but now prefers golf and skiing not to mention spending time with his wife and family.

Adam is registered with the General Osteopathic Council and a member of the British Osteopathic Association. He is a registered osteopathic consultant to all major insurance and private healthcare companies.

Paul's approach includes both traditional joint manipulation and articulation (moving), muscle energy techniques (using the muscles to relax themselves), together with more gentle Cranial Osteopathic techniques, soft tissue massage and rhythmical movement techniques. Paul combines both classical and modern osteopathic approaches to health by treating patients as a whole and not just a collection of different body parts.

Consultation & Treatment

You will only be seen by a qualified Osteopath registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).

If you prefer then you may have a friend or family member accompany you into the consulting room.

The initial consultation and treatment will last for approximately 30 minutes. Subsequent treatments last for approximately 30 minutes.

Before any treatment you will be asked detailed questions about your condition, past medical history including any operations, illnesses, accidents, and any medication you are currently prescribed and any changes in your general health.

Usually you will be asked to undress to your underwear. Osteopathy is a holistic treatment therefore it is important that your Osteopath sees not only the area that is causing problems but also other areas that can relate to your condition.

During the examination your Osteopath will carry out diagnostic tests such as blood pressure, reflexes, joint mobility and muscle strength.

You may be asked to perform simple movements to aid in the understanding and assessment of your situation.

Your Osteopath will form a diagnosis which will be discussed with you in detail and where appropriate, and with your consent, treatment will commence.
Your condition may require several treatments before resolving.

If your Osteopath does not think you would benefit from osteopathic treatment this will be explained to you.

After treatment advice will be given to aid your recovery and comfort, it is important that this advice is followed as this also forms part of your rehabilitation.

At any time during your appointment you can ask your Osteopath to stop treatment and explain anything they have said or any techniques performed.

Your Continued Health

After treatment, it is not advisable to partake in heavy exercise for 24 hours to give the tissues time to settle down. It must also be remembered that some conditions can be permanently helped, whilst others only partially relieved or maintained in balance. Each case will receive individual attention in an effort to get the fastest results possible with the longest lasting result.

On conclusion of the treatment and your successful return to health, you may choose to return for maintenance treatments in an attempt to prevent recurrence of pain, rather than waiting for an acute episode to occur, and undergoing intensive treatment if and when a problem returns.

If appropriate, your Osteopath may recommend a preventative treatment every two to six months depending on your original condition and lifestyle.

Throughout maintenance treatment your Osteopath will monitor changes in your overall health, adjust exercise plans (and ensure that you maintaining exercises and stretching) treat those areas that have been historically the source of your pain and associated areas.

Preventative osteopathic treatment aims to educate the patient, to ensure that they are fully aware of their physical limitations and to empower them to minimise the chances of their initial symptoms returning. Patients can withdraw from a preventative treatment program at any stage.

.Will treatment hurt?
Generally, osteopathic treatment does not hurt, although there may be some minor short-term discomfort, aching or stiffness, which will pass. Patients normally find that further treatments are much more comfortable, most look forward to coming!
Are there any risks?
Research has shown that osteopathy is one of the safest and most effective forms of manual therapy available and has far fewer risks than many other types of treatment and interventions for your problem. Your Osteopath will be happy to discuss all your concerns regarding treatment.
How long will treatment take to help my pain?
Osteopathy can significantly help pain, especially if carried out within the first six weeks. Classically the longer you have been in pain the longer it will take to achieve results. Your Osteopath will advise you of your likely recovery time. Although early treatment is preferable Osteopaths are also effective at treating long-standing or chronic pain.
How can a reoccurrence of my condition be prevented?
This will depend upon the condition itself. Where necessary the Osteopath will prescribe exercises and lifestyle adjustments. The practitioner may recommend maintenance treatment every two to six months depending upon your
original condition.
What if it is something serious?
If your Osteopath feels that treatment is not appropriate for your condition
you will be referred to your GP or to a suitable specialist.
What forms of payment are accepted?
We accept debit cards, cash and cheques – with cheque guarantee cards.
Will I be able to claim on my Health Insurance?
You may be able to claim for treatment against your health insurance. Call them prior to your first appointment as often you need a GP referral letter and an authorization number. Charges for radiological and professional witness reports are dealt with on an individual basis.
Who Recognises Osteopathy and by whom is it regulated?
In 1993 osteopathy became the first complementary health care profession to have undergone statutory regulation by Parliament giving Osteopaths the same legal status as dentists and doctors, guaranteeing patients the same level of professionalism, protection and confidentiality. Osteopath is a protected title; a practitioner can only practice as an osteopath if he/she is registered with the governing body. The General Osteopathic Council.
What Do Osteopaths Treat?
Although a great deal of osteopathic treatment is concerned with back pain and sciatica, there are many other conditions that can be treated successfully.
These include:
Sports injuries
Headaches
Neck and arm pain
Shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand problems
Repetitive strain injuries (R.S.I)
Hip, knee and foot problems
Whiplash and traumatic injuries
Problems experienced during pregnancy and post–natal issues
Childhood problems e.g. colic, sleeplessness and glue ear
Asthma and breathing difficulties
Degenerative conditions e.g. osteoarthritis
Tinnitus and jaw problems

What are the differences between an Osteopath and a Chiropractor?
Osteopathy and Chiropractic have very similar origins in 19th century North America, and treat patients with similar conditions, using hands-on techniques. There may be very little distinction between individual Osteopaths and Chiropractors. However, generally speaking, there is a difference in the style of practice. Osteopaths usually see each patient for a longer period. This enables us to spend time using highly developed palpation (sense of touch) skills to diagnose a patient’s problem and give the gentlest treatment we can to relieve their pain. Although, like Chiropractors, we do use the more robust “thrust” techniques where appropriate, this is in a context of slow joint articulation and soft tissue massage to change neural pathways and alter muscle chemistry. At Stockwood Osteopaths & Sports Injury Clinic we never leave patients by themselves for periods linked up to heat or vibratory pads, nor do we use any mechanical manipulation devices.
Patients are often confused by the use of the title “Dr” by Chiropractors. This is a courtesy title only. It does not necessarily denote previous medical qualification, or the holding of a higher degree, its use may be very misleading. Any doubts concerning exact qualifications should be addressed to the individual practitioner.
